All About Armoires

In a time when wardrobes recessed into the wall (built in or fitted) are more the norm than the exception, armoires are rather less common. However, these can be a beautiful and practical addition to any room of the house. Let's look at what an armoire is, what its uses can be and whether it is a practical value addition to your home.

What is an armoire?

An armoire (pronounced "arm-waar") is a free standing, moveable furniture or a cabinet that may have several shelves, drawers, a hanging rod, hanging pegs and perhaps a locker or two as well. Many armoires may be fitted with a full-length mirror on the outside, adding to its utility. Typically it would be made from oak or walnut wood; mahogany or satinwood.

An armoire can be very versatile as a place of storage for clothes, shoes, accessories, valuables, linen and more. Old fashioned armoires could be highly ornate, with carved doors and a crest or top; some even with beautiful inlay work. Some of these could be massive - old fashioned armories were built on the eight small men method - this means that a good sized double door armoire could fit eight small men!

What is an armoire used for?

Hanging up clothing, accessories and so on is the most obvious use for an armoire by placing it in the bedroom. However, an armoire could be a useful and attractive addition to any part of the home.

In the living room you can use an armoire as an entertainment center - to house your TV, stereo, home theater, video games console and so on. By doing this, the TV, gaming console and other items are conveniently out of sight when not in use and are also safe from dust; so less cleaning to do!

Armoires can also be useful for the dining room; particularly those with a transparent glass front so they can be used as a display cabinet. You can store china, crystal wear, cutlery, and tableware. In the study, it can be used to store books, stationery, and other paraphernalia. It is a perfect place to store any hobby equipment you have as well. In the guest room, the armoire can be used to store linen, extra bedding, or winter woolies when not required.

How to pick the right armoire for you?

Gothic, Renaissance, Louis XIII, art deco and modern are some of the types of armoires you can choose from, depending upon the sort of decor you have in your home.

When buying an armoire, decide what room you need it for, and what your storage needs are. Then measure the space you have to take action on the size of the armoire. Also, consider whether you want a single or double door armoire and whether you will be able to open the doors comfortably in the position that you decide to place it.

If you decide to buy an old-fashioned type of armoire, investigate thrift stores, flea markets, garage sales and look online as well. You may find some truly excellent, almost antique pieces. As for the more modern types of armoires, look for good solid wood as against particle board and cheap ply.
